Program Overview
Introduction:
Building on the success of the Summer 2018 MAA NREUP at UTRGV, we continue this summer 2019 with another research experience for undergraduate (REU) that is funded by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) through its NSF funded national program NREUP. The REU supports four UTRGV's junior students with a stipend of $3,850 along with bed-and-board. Besides the directors of the REU, two graduate assistants, supported by the college of sciences and school of mathematical and statistical sciences at UTRGV, are going to work on training the students.
The REU is going to be held from July 1, 2019 to August 26, 2019.
Students, in this REU, are working collaboratively in groups on research projects in Applied Mathematics that will culminate in the submission of a peer-reviewed paper coauthored jointly with the PI and Co-PIs. The program provides the students with educational and research skills and experiences, and with graduate school exam preparations to better prepare them for graduate school. The main emphasis of the program focuses on the areas of stochastic partial differential equations and numerical analysis with emphasis in MATLAB training. Participating faculty members are going to give research seminars to the group.
Statement of Problem:
The students, in this REU, are going to study general types of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with variable coefficients. For example the KdV- Burgers equation
The students will try to find the exact solution and establish a new numerical scheme to simulate the stochastic surface solution of the SPDEs.
