About Us
UTRGV is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Title V Hispanic-Serving Institution, with 90% Hispanic enrollment. It is 2nd in the nation in the number of Bachelor’s degrees and 3rd in the nation in the number of Master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics. The Railroad Research Group at UTRGV is composed of seven faculty, twenty two graduate and undergraduate research assistants, and two staff members.
The UTRGV Railroad Research Group is actively involved in research related to rolling-stock integrity and condition monitoring. Testing is conducted on different classes of tapered-roller bearings used world-wide. Current research efforts are aimed at bearing health monitoring utilizing temperature, vibration, and load sensor technologies. UTRGV currently possesses two four-bearing test rigs and two single bearing testers with vertical, lateral, and impact load capabilities that are used to perform laboratory testing in support of the ongoing Amsted Rail and U.S. DOT sponsored research projects.
