First of all, READ the chapters!
Don't solelyl rely on the lecture notes.
Second of all, do not proceed in studying until you have the main concepts down.
Definitively talking to the professor and asking for his advice on how to study really helps.
Look at the figures; if you cannot teach a figure, don't even proceed until you can.
Lastly, don't only understand the subject but also HAVE A PASSION FOR IT!!
