I am a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).
My research interests lie in the theory and applications of quantization, fractal geometry, dynamical systems, and related areas of analysis and geometry.
I am the Founding Chair of the
International Seminar on Quantization, Geometry, and Dynamics (ISQGD),
an online platform dedicated to fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas among
researchers worldwide.

Research Interest
My research focuses on the theory and applications of quantization, particularly the study of how probability measures can be efficiently approximated by discrete distributions. This includes both unconstrained quantization—the classical framework in which the support of the approximating distribution is free to lie anywhere—and constrained quantization, where the supporting points are required to lie on a specified geometric set. My work also explores deep connections between quantization, fractal geometry, dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and geometric measure theory.
Constrained quantization, introduced by Roychowdhury jointly with one of his collaborators, provides a powerful extension of classical quantization by incorporating geometric or physical restrictions on where support points may lie. This refinement has led to a natural classification of quantization theory into two branches: constrained and unconstrained quantization. Constrained quantization has numerous real-world applications. In radiation therapy for cancer treatment, it can be used to determine optimal placements of radiation sources while avoiding sensitive regions. In national security, constrained quantization provides a mathematical framework for optimally locating missile stations targeting specific regions. Additional applications include designing communication networks by determining optimal tower locations to minimize signal distortion.
I have further introduced the concept of conditional quantization in both constrained and unconstrained settings jointly with the same collaborator. Conditional quantization models situations in which some support points are preassigned. For example, in radiation therapy, if a subset of radiation centers must remain fixed, the remaining centers can be optimally placed using conditional quantization. These developments significantly enrich quantization theory and extend its applicability across mathematics, engineering, medicine, and national security.
My broader research interests also include higher-dimensional and geometric quantization on spheres, curves, manifolds, and fractal sets, as well as the interplay between quantization phenomena and dynamical or ergodic properties of measures.
